Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays can be used to restore the appearance and function of damaged or decayed teeth when they cannot be properly fixed with a standard filling, but a full crown is not necessary. Inlays and onlays are custom-made using impressions of the patient’s teeth.
A dental inlay involves using filling material on the interior of a tooth’s surface to cover some or all of the area within the cusps, or points, of the tooth. Because inlays are custom fit, they typically leave teeth stronger and more durable than teeth that have been treated with traditional fillings.
Onlays are somewhat more extensive than inlays, in that the filling material covers at least one of the points of the tooth. An onlay can even be used cover the entire chewing surface of the tooth if necessary. Onlays are a great option when a tooth requires significant restoration, but a full crown is not necessary.
